15 August, 2012, Auckland: Valentine's day will not only be a romantic occasion next year, but it should also be a day charged with adrenaline and excitement because it marks the beginning of the 2013 Auckland’s NZ Millennium Cup. The much expected event will be held at Hauraki Gul and it already counts with 4 registered teams, as well as a number of sponsors such as Alloy Yachts, Fitzroy Yachts and Touch of Spice among others.
There is one registered vessel, though, which promises to get the attention from regatta lovers. Built by Fitzroy Yachts, Ohana is a 50-metre Flybridge high performance Sloop that has become the subject of much discussion within the yachting industry. The Ohana will make its first appearance on February 14th 2013 during the NZ Millennium Cup. Designed by Dubois Naval Architects, the alleged racing monster should be spicing-up the competition next year.
The Omaha's debut will face some tough challenges as it will compete against the current champion Silvertip which is not going to give up the title that easily. However, Rodney Martin from Fitzroy Yachts comments about Ohana: “She’ll fly, for the first time, a huge 1,600m2 gennaker made by Doyle Sails” to then add the new vessel will be a tough one to defeat.
The organizers for the 2013 Auckland’s NZ Millennium Cup have also a few surprises in stock; the first five vessels to register for the regatta get half price off on the fees related to the competition. This means there is still one spot available for special pricing which will not remain that way for very long. The event also counts with some hospitality extras, Dockwise Yacht Transport (DYT) is already offering a special package for the event which includes a tour that will depart from Palma de Mallorca, Martinique and Florida, only to then stop at Costa Rica in its way to the final destination in New Zealand. Special Pricing for the regatta tickets are also available making the NZ Millennium Cup an event anticipated by many.
