Sam Gilmour and crew Steven Thomas, as well as Chris Smith and Alistair Marchesi are responsible for the well deserved victory for the University of Western Australia.
About the race Sam Gilmour commented: "Very close racing against Jay Griffin and his team on AUS 1. We had a penalty in the first race but could wash it off just in time to claim the win. In the second it was AUS 1 with the penalty and we held just close enough to not give them enough time to finish. Very hectic racing - almost some tears. Thanks to everyone for their Support, it has been great. "
The silver goes to ay Griffin, Jackson Cranfield from University of Technology, Jack Breislin for University Of New South Wales and Jack Dawson for University of Wollongong. The Australian woman’s team also demonstrated great skill by taking the 5th anf 7th place within the female division.
Australia shined amongst fifteen other nations that were competing in the World University Match Racing Championship. The bronze was given to Great Britain which is also the former champion from 2010. The British team started the race in very good terms taking the lead and maintaining it for the first two days. However, the Australian dominance became obvious started from the 3rd day of the race where two of their teams took the lead and kept it right until the end. By the end of the fifth and final day, Sam Gilmour's team had won the gold 2-0 in the best of 3 final.
