24 November 2011 - Asia’s oldest chain hotel company, The Peninsula Hotel, is now taking its stand and supporting the ban of sharks fin products. The hotel is now contributing to the global efforts to decrease the demand for numerous sharks fin products by banning the consumption of sharks fin at its hotel restaurants and banquet events.
Most sharks fin delicacies are very popular in Asian countries and around 1.5 million sharks are being slaughtered every week to support the high demands that is pushing the population of the said species to extinction.
Yesterday, The Peninsula Hotel announced that it would stop serving different sharks fin dishes, especially sharks’ fin soup effective January 01, 2012. This is not just for their Shanghai hotel but also in their eight other hotels from around the globe.
According to a Shanghai Peninsula Spokeswoman, “The hotel will strictly follow the ban. The renewed menus will be put into service as planned on the first day of next year. Our restaurant staff will recommend customers opt for some replacement seafood dishes, such as sea cucumber, when they order sharks fin after the ban takes effect.”
Also, Clement K.M. Kwok, CEO of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels Limited said, “By removing sharks fin from our menus, we hope that our decision can contribute to preserving the marine ecosystem for the world’s future generations. As Asia’s oldest hotel company, we also hope our decision will inspire other hospitality companies to do the same.”
Another hotel located in Shanghai, The Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel said that there had been no sharks fin on their menus right from the start of their operation and service in March and this is all the same with all other Jumeirah Hotels around the world.
A member of Shanghai-based JAR animal protection organization, Hui Hui said, “I sure appreciate such moves, but I believe more ordinary people need to be given the chance to learn about the harm of eating sharks fin. More individuals should volunteer to join the fight against eating sharks fin such as boycotting restaurants serving the dish.”
However, despite the uprising public awareness, different sharks fin dishes is still available in other hotels and restaurants in Shanghai.
