From the historic Delma Island, where archaeologists have discovered evidence of human existence dating back 10,000 years to the tourist-friendly Maya Island, which hosts a weekly beach party, Abu Dhabi boasts a complete spectrum of island life.

Those wanting something a little more developed can try the stunning Sir Bani Yas Island, home to the Arabian Wildlife Park which houses the world’s largest population of Arabian Oryx, and cheetahs, giraffes and ostriches, and the site of the ultra-luxurious Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara.

Marina Life
With more than 40 marinas expected to come online in the emirate over the next two decades, Abu Dhabi has already made strong headwind in establishing itself as a major sailing leisure destination with several world-class marinas now open.

The benchmark is the magnificent 143-berth Yas Marina, home to the Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Its unique setting, surrounded by Yas Marina Circuit, is the perfect vantage point for racing action or a quiet drink at the Yas Marina & Yacht Club, fine dining at Cipriani's, a casual bite to eat at Stars 'N Bars and exciting nightlife at Allure.

For those with a taste for the finer things in life, then Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi’s signature hotel, boasts one of the most prestigious yachting addresses – Yachts Marina. Located on the western side of this opulent ‘Palace’ in a private bay, the marina can moor 186 boats, with separate berthing for eight superyachts.

Just a short sail from here is the InterContinental Abu Dhabi Marina - one of the emirate’s most picturesque marinas. Abu Dhabi also has the world’s second largest population of the endangered dugong, so keep your eyes peeled for these charming creatures.

Keeping Alive The Legacy
For generations, Abu Dhabi has been at one with the sea. Ports throughout the emirate – from the small western marine hub of Delma Island, to the UAE capital – were home to fishing and pearling fleets and active boat yards where highly skilled craftsmen forged the traditional ‘dhow’, which quickly became noted as one of the sturdiest vessels afloat.

With the days of needing to ply their trade all along the sweeping coastline now long behind them, modern day sailors now have the chance to recreate this adventurous past at their own leisurely pace, and listen to the Arabian sea-shanties of yesteryear float on the warm ocean breezes.

Meet People
Abu Dhabi has an active and intimate sailing and watersports community that’s extremely welcoming of new recruits or those just passing through. So make sure you swing by one of the many clubs - you’ll never know who you may meet.

Brush Up Your Skills
With warm sunshine, blue waters and expansive coastline, Abu Dhabi’s waters are abuzz with year-round activity. Home to a full range of sailing vessels, from beginner’s Toppers and seasoned-veteran’s Catamarans to traditional Arabian dhows, Abu Dhabi is a great destination for those honing the basics or wanting to push themselves to the limits.

Keep Fit
What better way to stay in shape than out on the high seas. Whether it’s solo sailing in a Laser or hoisting sails on a 50-foot pleasure yacht, sailing’s a great way to stay slim and trim. And with Abu Dhabi boasting a wealth of stunning beach clubs, why not take advantage of the many health club facilities and gymnasiums on offer, to make sure your pool-side look is as hot as the weather.

Witness A Traditional Dhow Race Up-Close
Today there is rarely a more inspiring sight than that of stately Arabian dhows with billowing, white sails full ahoist. These traditional sailing vessels continue to ply the seas as they have done for hundreds of years in annual races which commemorate the days when pearl diving fleets, which had been at sea for months, would challenge each other to see which would be the first home with the season’s precious haul. Keep in touch with abudhabievents.ae to find out when the next races are on.

Unbelievable Fishing
Whether it is deep-sea fishing or just throwing a line off the back of the boat that appeals, Abu Dhabi is home to a wealth of fish species such as dorado, kingfish, queenfish, sailfish and tuna. For those who don’t like to get their hands dirty, Abu Dhabi also boasts a plethora of mouth-watering seafood restaurants, such as Finz at the Beach Rotana, Pearls & Caviar at Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri, and Sayad at Emirates Palace; to whet the appetite after a long-day out at sea. Enjoy the fishing!

New yacht marina soon in Yeouido, Seoul

  • PDF
korea-marinaA yacht marina will open in Yeouido, Seoul, on April 16, accommodating 90 yachts at a time and providing rentals and sailing lessons, as reported by the korea times.
Seoul Metropolitan Government said Thursday that the yacht complex, named “Seoul Marina,” will be located near the Yeouido Han River Park behind the National Assembly building.

It is the first of its kind in Seoul, the 12th in the nation, and will be third in terms of facility size.

The marina will consist of moorings for 90 yachts, a four-story building with classrooms, a convention hall, restaurants and cafes, as well as parking areas.

With Seoul making 45 yachts available, citizens will be able to rent them at affordable prices. The rental for a boat for one to three people is 4,000 won per person per hour and that for a day cruiser with a six-person capacity is 15,000 won per person ― about 60 percent of rental cost at other marinas in Korea.
“Citizens can sail the yachts themselves after receiving about an hour of training,” a city official said.

Sailing lessons will be available at the marina. A yacht class for youths will open for the first time in Korea at 50,000 won for six hours of sailing lessons. Adult courses will also be offered at reasonable prices.

Twenty of the 90 moorings will be used for public yachts including rescue boats and for the anchorage of private boats.

Cyclists who used to cross the Han River by bridge can now use a yacht. A “bike ferry” will operate between the marina and Mangwon Han River Park once every hour. The 10-minute ride is 1,000 won per person.

“We aim to develop the river as a venue for marine leisure and water sports. We hope the opening of the marina will lead to a boom in the yachting culture in Korea,” the city official said.

The Island of Mauritius

  • PDF

mauritius94Mauritius is an island located in the Indian Ocean. The Island is part of the Mascarene Archipelagos which consists of four big islands combined together. Mauritius got its independence since 1968 leaving the reign of the British and currently it is among the most well controlled African countries, thank to its value for public services, good conducts and economic growth.

As a yachting destination, Mauritius is perfect with its sublime bays, turquoise waters, marine life, safe and clear unrestricted places and unspoiled mainland. Port Louis the capital of the island is the best area to begin at. Port Louis got a number of good restaurants, shops and historical sites. It was named following Louis XV at the time the Island was ruled by the French during the year 1735. The city of Port Louis has a lot of colonial buildings and among them the Citadelle dated back to 1835 is the most admired, on its top you can have a stunning panorama of the entourage.

Caudan-waterfrontAt Port Louis, the Caudan Waterfront a colonial styled fat building with all sorts of innovative shops is another distraction. Next to it there is the impressive 4 star Labourdonnais hotel, a luxurious yet calm lobby containing excellent restaurants. If you want to know the Mauritian culture and the local shopping, then you should pay a visit to the Bazaar of Part Louis. All prices of vegetables, fruits and other products are prescribed on wooden cards but are all negotiable. Walking to the near China town might enjoy you to taste authentic China dishes. The currency is the Mauritian Rupee (RS). Credit cards and travelers cheques are accepted in many places.

If you enjoy surfing then you might want to be at Tamarin Bay. Considered the best water to catch great waves, “santosha” as called by some, Tamarin became popular when back in the 1960’s some Australian Surfers started the sport there. Le Morne Point is another beach in the south where many folks do wind surfing. Winds are continuous every time there. Most of the best beaches around the Island are private as well as part of Hotels or complex villas. So if you choose one of these hotels or villas to spend some days there, you won't regret your time at all.

Moreover, if hiking interest you, the gorge of Black River will be an excellent trip. Even though you might find it tough, it is worth to go. The moment you will attain its peak at Plaine Chamgagne you will be able to admire the gorgeous gorge. Many of the endangered birds and animals are preserved, and visitors are welcomed to appreciate the fragile balance of the forests ecosystem with the help of The National Park.

With your sailing yacht, motor yacht or catamaran, an ideal trip is to visit Ile au Gabriel which is just off the northern point of the Island or Ile au Aigrette which is in the south of the island. They are beautifully unspoiled with lots of rare species. You will be amazed at their beauties, and the sceneries are really proportioned to picture perfect postcards.

Creole is the language that is commonly used by the local people. It is a mixture of English, French and Dutch, but you might also hear some people talking in Urdu, Chinese and Indian as well. Mauritian still put great emphasis on culture, politeness and family values even though their standard of living has increased considerably during the last two decades.

With temperatures ranging from 77-91°F (25-33°C) from December to April which is summer period and 64-75°F (18-24°C) during the winter period, Mauritius usually has a tropical climate. Humidity is reduced and the east coast is caused to be slightly cooler and wetter than the west with the help of the southeast trade winds. The months of May to early December are the recommended time gap to visit Mauritius, as  peak cyclone months falling in January and February though the cyclones hardly hit the island itself, they are best avoided by those wanting to be out on the water.
