23 April 2012

A MAN has died after jumping from a yacht when police came to question him about a minor assault, reported yesterday by the courier mail australia.

The man was on board a yacht at Shute Harbour Marina, near Airlie Beach, about 9:20am when police tried to coax him to come to shore from the beach.

The 51-year-old man began to steer the yacht towards police but he jumped overboard and failed to resurface.

Police and paramedics tried to rescue the man but he died at the scene.

The Queensland Police Service Ethical Standards Command has launched an investigation into the incident which will be overseen by the Crime and Misconduct Commission.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
