There are two sides to this argument, much like the sail vs power issue. I personally like the benefits of both but starting out you will end up with either of these types of yacht.
Private yachts are normally that, Private, used personally by the family & friends. These types of yachts will have varied programs from Global cruising to being used on weekends or for vacations. The crew benefit from a relaxed working environment with opportunities to travel and experience the sites with their guests. Private yachts also offer different perks to help maintain crew, like extended vacations, extra flights home, Bonuses & the private yachting lifestyle. The only thing that doesn’t change is the standard of service offered to the guests. This professionalism & highest level of service is what makes yachts stand out.
The next type of yacht is a Charter Yacht.
Guests pay a hansom premium for the use of these amazing yachts for a number or days or weeks depending on their planned vacation. Summer is the busiest time of year, with winter coming a close second, as yachts head down to the Caribbean. On average a boat will be chartered out from 1-2 weeks, but they can be chartered out for any length of time, as it just depends on how much they feel like spending. With the yacht acting like a floating hotel with all sorts of water sports available, you can spend your time in one small area or be travelling hundreds of miles, travelling to numerous ports. Some people will disagree but most will say that the pace and hours of work are much greater on charter boats. With a hectic schedule of sight seeing, water sports and travelling between ports and anchorages your days will be fairly jammed packed. Once that trip is over you’ll clean the boat and get it ready to do it all again. The bonus to working on a charter yacht is the opportunity to earn good tips, a nice little bonus to all the hard work you put in to making your guests trip one to remember. Charter yachts tend to offer less perks as part of your employment package due to the tips made from charters. However this is not always the case and some of the basics like medical, flights and paid vacation are quite commonly offered.
