All I can say is WOW! Honestly one of the most amazing things I have ever done in my life. Even as a child I've always wanted to come up here and experience the rawness of nature untouched. Well i can tell you that it's all true.
Lucky for me I've come up, working on a yacht that is spending the summer cruising the inside passage of BC and SE Alaska. Nothing wrong with that, a few long hours to offset amazing views and even more amazing sightings of wildlife! Just the other day we anchored up just north of Fredrick Sound and had close to 20 Humpbacks of varying sizes, bubble feeding, breaching and chatting amoungst themselves... AMAZING!
So, I gather I may have your attention? If you are planning on cruising the South East, you really really need to account for the amount of miles that you will be travelling versus the time you have allowed. Cruising from Vancouver to Juneau in 10 days - 2 weeks would not be fun, too rushed and you would be looking at crusing 8-10 hours a day minimum. What would I suggest? To start I would say, if you have a month... Great! If not, maybe break it into two, two week trips? Vancouver to Prince Rupert BC, then have another trip start in Ketchikan to Juneau.
The inside passage is fantastic, san juan islands, desolation sound and then cruising up, the views are amazing. However ( this is my personal opinion ) it all just becomes more amazing the further north you go. For me, my money would be on starting in Prince Rupert, cruise around and check out the Grizzly Sanctuary in Khutzmaateen inlet, then head up into Alaska. With out fail you can fill in 7-8 days of fun in South East Alaska. Glaciers, Float Plane rides, Black & Brown bear viewing areas, hot springs, whale / orca / sea lion watching, not to mention some of the most amazing hikes around. In short,... IT"S GREAT!
There is soo much to do up here,... so if you'd like any ideas, hints or some more photo's let me know. I'd be happy to help!
